ALT.SF4M Is anybody out there...? • Robert Warren Subiaga, Jr. 01/02/1995 18:11:26 UTC I'm hoping this seeming bit of shameless, narcissistic self-promotion doesn't piss off the Internet population. I just wanted to mention that my novel, EYES, was recently published--especially since distribution has been meager and spotty and most people probably haven't seen it. If you HAVE seen it stocked somewhere, particularly outside the Upper Midwest, could you let me know? And can you contact me too if you haven't seen it but would like to? (It was published by Chaos Warrior Productions, with a ISBN # of 1-884759-99-8) Described briefly in the publisher's own words: "An enigmatic, powerful--and perhaps vampiric?--immortal leads two lovers into violent confrontation on the borders of mysicism and modern science." Some of the reviews and notice it HAS received includes: "EYES is the first novel by Minneapolis writer Subiaga, and the first book published by a local small press. It's an impressive start for both. The story centers on Matthew Kabal, adventurer, mercenary, brilliant dabbler in art, physics and philosophy. Some characters see him as a valued friend, others as an enigma to unravel, others as a monster to be destroyed at all costs. This ambitious novel blends horror, suspense, science fiction, action and ideas...Subiaga mostly meets the difficult challanges he sets himself. Minor characters are clearly delineated, and the three main ones explored in considerable dimension. Kabal is many-layered, charismatic and scary. Subiaga is a good storyteller, with an eye for telling detail and the ability to hold our interest through slow and fast-paced scenes. The action scenes crackle, as does much of the dialogue. And he brings together a wide range of ideas in original, memorably disturbing ways." --Eric R. Heideman (editor, TALES OF THE UNANTICIPATED) review from The Minneapolis STAR-TRIBUNE (1/29/95) "Imagine locking Richard Back and Briam Lumley in a coat closet and not letting them out until they delivered..." --DREAMHAVEN BOOKS catalog (summer 1994) "This distinctly subtle oeuvre would appeal very much to our readers." --Brian W. Firth RAPPORT: WEST COAST REVIEW "A most entertaining and compelling book." --Stan Lee, Marvel Comics Publisher "Anne Rice? Comparing EYES to usual fiction of this kind would be like comparing THE EXORCIST to PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE..." --Dr. Michael Genin, co-author THE CREATOR TRILOGY "...thoughtful, thought-provoking, and intelligent..." --Jonathon Lazear, The Lazear Agency "...plenty of absorbing sub-plots and atmosphere... Rachel is sensitively drawn and Matthew Kabal is a fascinating, Col. Kurz-like character." --Racel Hore, COLLINS PUBLISHERS "...a resonant, magnetic tale that grabs the reader and doesn't let go, with main characters and even supporting characters with convincing realism..." --MANUSCRIPTS INTERNATIONAL "...this is no weak-kneed, touchy-feely CELESTINE PROPHECY here! Not unless Redfield let some story specs fall into the gleeful little grip of someone like Clive Barker or Harlan Ellison... Hitch a ride on this novel and you'll go searching the Himalayas for a holy man with a little cooking kettle to ask him for the Meaning of Life--only to find him and have him turn around with a shit-eating grin to snarl, 'You know, this ain't no SIPPIN' tea!'"
