ALT.SF4M Another loss... • Carl Pearson 30/01/1996 00:00:000 UTC Rick Dunning, Nashville, Tennessee science fiction fan and artist passed away on Saturday, January 27th, 1996 after an attempted heart bypass operation. If you attended Kubla Kahn in the past dozen years or so, you will have seen Rick's prize work, the annual Frank R. Paul award. This model of the planet Saturn was given to the convention's artist guest of honor; con chairman Ken Moore created and assembled the award, and Rick painted it. Every year he would incorporate the latest astronomical data into the rings. (And they thought phonograph turntables would go out of style!) For the past three years, another award for the writer guest, named in honor of Donald A. Wollheim, was also painted by Rick. This was a model of the planet Neptune. Rick was in his late 40's and had already had one bypass operation. Since his wish was to be cremated after all usable organs were donated, there will be no official funeral, but the Nashville Science Fiction Club will be holding a small celebration of Rick's life this coming Saturday, February 3. For further information, please phone Ken Moore at 615.832.8402 -- Rest in peace, Rick. We'll miss you... _____________________________________________________________ Carl Pearson P.O.
