Dorky space cadets do good! • s******j@**.com 12/03/1996 00:00:000 UTC Weeel ahl be deeped in sheet! I turned on _Space Command_ last night expecting something really, really, stupid. They disappointed me. This ABOVE AND BEYOND wannabe actually seemed to have been written by someone who had read some science fiction. Imagine a 1950's space combat story, perhaps written by Ben Bova or Poul Anderson, adapted for the small screen. There's plenty to scoff at. Ships and lasers that make sounds in space; space fights that look like jet dog fights; crewmen who seem to have been crazy-glued into their spotless white dress uniforms; bad guys with teutonic accents* crazy-glued into spotless black uniforms. But the show didn't make me feel _stupid_ for watching. ONE thing scares me silly; that independents will buy this show instead of the much-superior but not as widely appealing _Babylon 5_. _Space Command_ is bubble gum; _B5_ is consistently surprising brain food. --SEJ * The show was produced and filmed in Germany, so Prussian - sounding heavies were probably easy to come by. -- +-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-+ ***@***.com ~ s*****s@a*****.***u.edu ~ s******j@**.com http://www.ini.cmu.edu/~sjones/ • s******r@s**.***.*****n.edu 12/03/1996 00:00:000 UTC In article <4i44j2$***@x*****.**o.com>, s******j@**.com (Stefan E. No, you see, you misunderstood it. The good guys were the ones in black with the German accents. The bad guys had the American accents. The good guys just won because Germans enjoy a nice downer. -- K. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Kevin L. Sterner | U. Penn. Sorry, I'm not sure because this thread only goes back two messages and neither mentions anything about it other than the "Dorky space cadets..." part. But I just feel so strongly about this movie that I must post. It sucked. A lot. The acting was second rate at best. There were funny parts here and there, but they were _unintentional_ (like when the captain flies across the bridge). The story was very unintelligent. The villains were made out to be incredibly stupid and most of the action sequences were remarkably contrived, unrealistic, and laughably dumb. The military structure was incredibly badly thought out, as was the regulations which were spouted out all too often. Even the special effects...well, it's hard to screw up sfx, but you could tell that the snow was completely cgi. Well, I actually only saw the last hour, so it's possible that hour one was fantastic, but something tells me that this is sadly not the case. Star Command (or whatever it was called) is being replayed in the Forum on Wednesday night. I have posted an official plea to boycott it into Log (I think it's number 71b). To think...we found something worse than Voyager! • j*******a@c*****.**.******b.edu 14/03/1996 00:00:000 UTC John D Cholewa (j*******a@c*****.**.******b.edu) wrote: : Star Command (or whatever it was called) is being replayed in the Forum : on Wednesday night. I was actually successful in organizing a boycott of Star Command! Now, onto the next piece on the agenda... I am calling for people to clear their schedules ahead of time and make room to come to the Stony Brook area in Early Summer '97 to participate in a Forum Road Trip(TM) to see the repremiere of Star Wars IV (ANH). I'm doing this waayyyyyyyyyyy ahead of time because I know that it's insanely hard to get Forumites together to do _anything_! So, who can go possibly? • b*****t@n*******.**i.net 14/03/1996 00:00:000 UTC Stefan E. I turned on Space Command expecting ST:Voyager - has it been permanently relocated sometime else? Space Command was more than a little dorky at first and got better as time went on (although I tuned in the end of the VR torture scene so maybe it just took time for me to get up to speed with the story). : There's plenty to scoff at. Ships and lasers that make sounds in space; : space fights that look like jet dog fights; crewmen who seem to have : been crazy-glued into their spotless white dress uniforms; Let's not forget those extremely short skirts on the female dress uniforms and the first officer's long dress with the slits up to her underarms... "Hoo hoo, George, here comes the exec, let's short out the artificial gravity again!". I thought this stuff went out with the original Star Trek Series. If you want something pulchritudinous and believable, go with skin tight outfits that slip under a pressure suit at a moment's notice... Hey anybody want to start a collection to get one of those dress uniforms made up for Jill? Please post your preference for white micro or blue slit version... Sorry Jill, given the recent posts I couldn't resist, plus the fact that I'm liable to miss ICON AGAIN (no chance to see that black skirt which you are probably tossing in the rag bag at this moment). It's a bummer that there probably isn't a person still at the physical Forum who would recognize me if I came through the door (which in Jill's case is probably not bad "Hi, I'm Tom." "Hi Tom, I'm Jill." "KAPOW!"). Anyway, Space Command wasn't half bad, and the effects were pretty good (corvette landing on the "carrier" ship sequence comes to mind).
