ALT.SF4M Short Book Review • c******u@s*****a.net 18/04/1996 00:00:000 UTC Hi, fellow Sci-Fi fans! This is a short review of the Dan Simmons book "Phases Of Gravity" copyright 1989, published by Bantam Doubleday Dell Publishing. You may know Dan Simmons as one of the great new horror authors, but Phase of Gravity is a great sf read. It concerns the plight of one of the original moon-landing astronauts, who longs for a return to space. His dreams are squelched by our economy and NASA's new directions (away from any forseeable moon-based efforts). He has to come to grips with his earthly bonds and his sense of unrest caused by being a frontiersman on a fenced-in territory. I especially liked the way Simmons described the fictional astronaut's physical pain that results from going for too many hours in a row away from the controls of any large machinery (that should hit a lot of happy commuters where they live!). Simmons is an excellent talent for our time and, for IMHO (30-something), he could be my generation's Hemingway. p.s.- Don't forget to check out William Gibson's "Burning Chrome," too! Simmon's LOVEDEATH collection is most good, too. -- +-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-+ ***@***.com ~ s*****s@a*****.***u.edu ~ s******j@**.com http://www.ini.cmu.edu/~sjones/ • k******d@d*****i.com 18/04/1996 00:00:000 UTC In article <4l54ho$***@n***.******a.net>, c******u@s*****a.net (Raymond E. Thanks for the book review Ray! I have not read "Phases of Gravity", but I did enjoy "Hyperion" and "Fall of Hyperion." I hear that he has a sequel out, but can't think of the title at the moment. > p.s.- Don't forget to check out William Gibson's "Burning Chrome," too! Mmm...good stuff. I'm in the middle of "Virtual Light" right now.... --Doc k******d@d*****i.com
