Box 5752, Merivale Depot, Nepean, Ontario, K2C 3M1 Phone 613-738-1012 -- E-Mail to: c*****n@a*******s.net Web site at: http://www.achilles.net/cancon http://www.achilles.net/cancon">http://www.achilles.net/cancon ------------------------------------------------------------------- --- Important Note! -- Important Note! -- Important Note! --- ------------------------------------------------------------------- There is a dire shortage of hotel space in the city since it is the Victoria Day long weekend *and* in the middle of the Tulip Festival! So what we have done is set up a hotel and bed-and-breakfast hot-line through our 613-738-1012 telephone number. Instead of having to spend many hours hunting all through the city for a hotel, let us do it for you! As an alternate for the more rugged types (or those on a tight budget), we have free crash space available (bring your sleeping bag!). For us to reserve a hotel room for you, call the "hot-line" number and leave your name, address, telephone numbers (day and evening), and your credit card information (card type, number, and expiry date). You will then be called with the name, address, and phone number of the hotel you will be staying at, and a reservation number for your room. The hotels and bed-and-breakfasts we have been looking at all have room rates less than $100 Cdn. per night -- if $100 is too steep for you, please let us know when you phone and we will do our best (in most cases, rooms will not be that much anyways, but we do need the authority to go ahead and book what we can find). For those people who are coming to CAN-CON via public transportation (e.g. car, train, plane), please let us know and we will try to find you rides to and from your hotel. There will be a shuttle for VIPs that we can use to shuttle other people around as well if we have to. Highlights for 1996: -------------------- - Brainstorming about the future: technology, science, society, culture, politics, art, literature, myth, etc. - Computer Expo showcasing new multi-media technology, the world-wide-web, and other new technologies. - Emphasis on the business of Canadian speculative fiction: from writing to printed book to retail sales. - Host to 2nd Academic Conference on Canadian Content in Speculative Arts and Literature (ACCCSAL, pronounced axle). May 18th. Presentations of research and insights for both academics and the layperson. - AGM of the Canadian Science Fiction and Fantasy Foundation and other important business meetings. About Our Invited Guests: ------------------------- * Robert Charles Wilson is the author of such critically acclaimed novels as Memory Wire, The Harvest, Bridge of Years, and Mysterium. He is equally at home writing fantasy, hard (technological) science-fiction, and alternate worlds; but his work consistently focuses on people and their interaction with their society and environment. Mr. Wilson proves with his writing that speculative fiction can be true literature. * Charles de Lint is a writer of international stature, and his second novel, Moonheart, created a genre which has become known as Urban Fantasy. A well-known reviewer and practising Celtic musician of 20 years, he is the author of such well known books as Greenmantle, Mulengro, Drink Down the Moon, The Little Country, and Memory and Dream (the list goes on). This is the first time he has been to an event of this type in this area for many years, so don't miss him! * Robert J. Sawyer was Guest of Honour at the 1993 CAN-CON and an invited guest in 1995. His introductory novel Golden Fleece won Orson Scott Card's Best SF Novel of 1990 and garnered an Aurora Award for Best English Novel 1990/91. His Quintaglio Ascension trilogy has received tremendous praise, and The Terminal Experiment sold very well as both an SF mystery story and as a mainstream novel, and just won the Nebula for Best Novel...and is nominated for the Hugo in the same Catagory. Our Parent Organization: ------------------------ CAN-CON is an autonomous subsidiary of The Society for Canadian Content in Speculative Arts and Literature, a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of new and established Canadian artists, authors, and industry and the enjoyment of their works through a commitment to forge new links between interest groups, to inform and network individuals, and to actively take part in the Canadian and international scenes through autonomous events and publications. Our Mission Statement: ---------------------- Those who watch speculative fiction on television or read it in books are the thinkers and doers of tomorrow, and CAN-CON's goal is to get us all together -- face to face -- to discuss where our technology and developing society might take us. We do this not only for the thrill of exploring what possibilities the future holds for us, but also to prepare for the physical and ethical dangers our species will have to deal with. CAN-CON is not just a place where people get together to discuss books and authors, it is where ideas come together to shape the future of our world and the future of our children.
