ALT.SF4M Mythos: HP Lovecraft Game • g*****o@l**.****t.net 03/06/1996 00:00:000 UTC MYTHOS ======= Well I took a look at a new HP Lovecraft [Cthulhu] game which is called MYTHOS. Besides it looking at first like a Magic the Stupidity clone, it turned out to be a cool and exciting game. You build your deck to complete "story plots". Every story plot you complete adds victory points to your total score. Every person in the game starts out with a character and a set of Sanity Points. You prevent other players from completing their Story Plots by doing the following; --Send some monster to try to kill the other players and their allies. --Slap Phobias which reduce Characters Sanity Points. --Events that screw up the other player's progress. When the first investigator reaches 0 Sanity Points, the game is over. Who ever has the highest number of victory points wins. Even if you were the first one to reach 0 Sanity Points, you can still win the game. We had a blast playing it the other night. When you complete a Story Plot, you have to read the story out loud and show everybody that you visited certain places, escape from the jaws of alien monsters, found arcane books and make it back home alive. It reminded me of that board game Clue. "Great Scott! It was Col. Mustard in the Library with the Candle Stick!" The Mythos game NEVER turns into a bloodbath like Magic. The Player Characters never make contact with other players. You and the other player are the Authors that send these terrors to go after the other players. Some events can cause things to go wrong with every player on the table. Give this game a chance before comming up with a snap opinion. Arkham Horror ============== The Mythos game sort of reminded me of the boardgame Arkham Horror. The Investigators go around and complete certain adventures. I believe one reviewer from Dragon Magazine called this game "Fungi in Candyland". --Glen
