ALT.SF4M Gorno's Online Job Search • j********o@***.com 09/06/1996 00:00:000 UTC Fiddlesticks! The only serious justification I had in going on-line was that I had convinced myself that it would facilitate my search for employment. Now that I finally consider the issue, that seems to have been naive. Does anyone have an idea how I can seach for job opportunities on-line (I haven't tried web-browsing for "jobs" - that seems a little general to be of any use). I have the NY Labor Department's job listings website, but I'm looking for some way of using the web to search for programming jobs in general, preferrably in Westchester (I haven't studied my Web manual yet, since I'd have to wade through a lot to even start). And no, I'm not going to get my own home-page: I've sunk too much money in this already! Probably soon to have another screen-name... Just gotta know where to look. >Does anyone have an idea how I can seach for job opportunities on-line (I >haven't tried web-browsing for "jobs" - that seems a little general to be >of any use). Well, there's one problem right there. "Job" isn't the word companies use these days. Some class thing, I guess. You're looking for a CAREER or a POSITION or EMPLOYMENT. Strategy I: "Go" to Lycos, the mondo web search engine. (http://www.lycos.com). Use the advanced search tool to look for combinations like: westchester AND programming westchester AND opportunities programming AND employment programming AND position etc. Strategy II: "Go" to Yahoo. (http://www.yahoo.com). Look for companies that are of interest to you. A lot of companies advertise for positions on their web pages. Yahoo categorizes by general business type, region, etc. Yes, this will take awhile. But the search will let you know what is out there, the language used for job hunting, etc. >I'm looking for some way of using the web to search for programming jobs >in general, preferrably in Westchester (I haven't studied my Web manual >yet, since I'd have to wade through a lot to even start). Bah! Manual for fool and weakling! Searching is a matter of finding the right tools, like Yahoo and Lycos, and phrasing the question right. >And no, I'm not >going to get my own home-page: I've sunk too much money in this already! Home pages wouldn't help a bit. You've got to go looking for them. >Probably soon to have another screen-name... AOL is neat that way. I got my mom, two aunts and a sister "on line" thanks to that feature. Go! You want to read the newsgroup "nyc.jobs", where a vast number of jobs are posted for the greater NY City area. Even Westchester/Yonkers/etc. ttyl Farrell
