ALT.SF4M Independence Day (spoilers) • k******d@d*****i.com 07/07/1996 00:00:000 UTC All-- So have you seen Idependence Day yet? As a shoot-'em up comic book style summer movie it really is very good! It's funny and has great special effects. Very good casting. Will Smith was excellent as was Bill Pullman. It held my interest despite being over 2 hours long. As a science fiction film it kinda sucks. As Perianne pointed out, there's hardly an original thought in the whole flick: bits from every sci-fi movie from the last thirty years are cut like broadcloth and woven into the plot (i.e. the "Dr. Strangelove" Slim Pickens ploy or the modified "War of the Worlds" defense, not to mention liberal dashes of "Star Wars"). Impausible plot points abound (Attack a 15 mile diameter alien starship with fighters?! _GOOD_ idea lord! I guess the world's arsenal of missles was out at the cleaners that week.). The depiction of the head scientist at Area 51 was awful. The character had his head so far up his ass that he hadn't a clue as to what was going on around him. He's really smart and therefore has no compassion for his fellow human beings. Great _thank you_ - that kind of 'mad scientist' crap is best left to the 1950s where it belongs. It's definitely fun and worth going to see on the big screen, just check your disbelief at the door! --Doc
