ALT.SF4M What a wonderful world! • j********o@***.com 20/01/1997 00:00:000 UTC A though I've had recently is that the state of the world since the fall of the Soviet Union has been pretty rosy. Even the outlaw states have been well behaved (with a weak president, yet) which argues that the influence (more specifically, money) of the Soviets was responsible for most of the crap the world's endured since the end of WWII. Perhaps the Chinese will become the new trouble-makers; perhaps the rogues will become more agressive, but I tend to think that it's smooth sailing for the next few years. Also, imagine if that evil influence hadn't existed at all: what a wonderful world it might be. As for all these knee-jerk Africa states, who really cares? I can never remember a time when they weren't butchering each other. Since there has been nothing on the news as grand as the Old Soviet Guard, people are seeing more of these stupid petty civil wars. I find it hard to beleive that the Chinese will be as big as a threat like the Soviet Union. They have even larger problem with their growing population and trying to feed them. Their culture has been ripped apart and science [in general] has once again became second place to Psychic Healers and their lot. Their Health System is using and promoting Psychic Healing and Herbal medicines because the infrastructure of the Health System isn't big enough to take care of all those Chinese citizens. There is a two issue special about this at the Skeptical Inquirer Website about this topic. I wouldn't doubt if the government whipped up some super virus or fungus that was designed to wipe out rice producing plants. Instant starvation. Then again, this would be immoral and everybody knows that governments would never do ANYTHING immoral. --Glen • f*******e@n*****t.com 20/01/1997 00:00:000 UTC j********o@***.com wrote: >A though I've had recently is that the state of the world since the fall >of the Soviet Union has been pretty rosy. I could accept the Soviet Union being a major financial interloper, but the world hasn't been so rosy. Consider what has happened since the break-up: Persian Gulf War, Civil War in Rwanda and Burundi (nothing-states in the realms of international importance, but still a tragic by its own volition), worsening of Civil War in Somalia, Liberia. Wait, is the whole continent of Africa in civil war now? There's also the violent breakup of Yugoslavia as well as a heavy dose of violence in the Middle East. However, what I do find interestsing is how quiet Libya has been, relatively speaking, ever since Reagan bombed it. Perhaps there's a lesson to be learned.
