     Cool News. A New Lambmark in Cloning Technology. That was some news

     hearing that scientists in Scotland cloned a mammal for the first time.

     Already some people are saying that it should be banned. Of course you

     don't hear these people ever complain about all those Pseudo-Scientists

     creating up bunk like ESP, Atlantis and UFOs.

         Cloning will probably be abused in all sorts of stupid ways, but

         i) Mostly this will happen in other countries, where they have the

         technology but not the cultural inclination to stop it. I see a big

         market for clone babies in countries where familiar continuity and

         "macho" are important. They'll all be boys, of course. And pets . .

         the Japanese are big into faddish status symbol pets. Imagine hordes

         of high-priced identical (kittens, dogs, prarie dogs) in pet shop

         windows that look just like the animal stars of dumb TV shows.

         ii) Cloning and recombination are too damn useful for too many
         perfectly

         innocuous / beneficial purposes to ban outright.

         Which means the next few decades are going to be weird and painful
         and

         contentious and full of wonder.

         Take two baby steps forward to the Singularity.

         I don't agree with the anti-cloners, but give them credit for being
         smart

         enough to realize that the above-mentioned are too stupid to bother

         fighting against.
