ALT.SF4M Speeding up my PC Query • j********o@***.com 18/03/1997 00:00:000 UTC I have a 486DX VESA, running at 80 MHz, with an overdrive socket (for you speed-weenies out there, it was cheap and eminently suited for my needs). Is there any way to improve my speed (I've seen upgrade kits for slower computers, but I may be at my clock speed already)? What benefits would I derive from going Pentium, anyway? I've already put in some memory (up to 12 MB, now), and it hasn't helped speed up compiling, for example, so I think I have enough of that for now. A side note: why did they bother allowing for 128 KB RAM on computers that will be obsolete long before we get near needing or wanting that much memory? (I suppose it's just a matter of the architecture allowing it, so it's advertised as if it's useful). There missing carriage returns or something. I've seen "bare-bone" Pentium 133mhz systems for as little as $250. You get the case, motherboard, CPU and power supply. All you do is move your cards to it. 16megs of EDO memory simms go for around $75-$85 dollars each. Even on as shoe-string budget, one should be able to get a real screamer of a system. I'm still using a DX/4-100mhz computer with 20megs. I'm waiting for the Pentium-166mhz prices to drop as low as the 133s. It's the old waiting game. --Glen "We're all Devo!"
