Okay, enough is ENOUGH!!! • John Cholewa 01/06/1997 00:00:000 UTC (most of this message is complaining about smut, the latter part is on topic) Can't we do anything about the porn spam here? I mean, it's fine and all getting occasional threads from www.treknude.com" and "Space Amazones", but this is getting out of hand! I mean, FIFTEEN spams sent out, all within a period of a few hours? This is starting to piss me off, when the number of nonrelated sex posts outnumbers the related Sci-Fi posts here! I know it is said that there aren't really laws against spamming, but isn't there anything about harassment? If someone walks up to you on the street everyday and tells you "I'll be your telephone fuckslut for only fifty bucks", shouldn't you be able to do something about it? Sigh...I'm sorry, it's jsut that I jumped up on alt.sf4m to forget my troubles and argue over how Clarke is a dolt and Hogan rules, etcetera (or vice-versa) and just have a good time reading. And THIS is what I'm left to read? Ugh. Would it be okay if we organized to mailbomb every spam group that assaults us? I know that in many cases, the mail addresses are phony, but in the case of "unlv.net", this hopefully would not be the case. What are our options here? We must be able to do SOMETHING! It's totally annoying. At worst case, we could try emails to backtrace to which mass mailing lists we're on and request removal. Yes, I know I'm just a crackpot at the moment, and none of this will happen (whether or not it could work). But I just wish there was a way to get around this stupidity. Hmmm...how about rec.arts.sf4m.moderated? Naaah! -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Anyway, here's the ON TOPIC stuff: In a fit of downloading frenzy, I've been grabbing movie trailers from the net. Here's a mention of a few I've seen: ----- "Imagine a substance...with the power to destroy all of humanity. Imagine a creature...insane enough to use it. Imagine a hero on the verge of creation. • Jennifer Adams 02/06/1997 00:00:000 UTC John Cholewa wrote: > (most of this message is complaining about smut, the latter part is on > topic) > Can't we do anything about the porn spam here? Hi J.C.! I totally agree with you. If the newsgroups name is so damn mistakable for a porn newsgroup... I think we should change it. Even if it's just to rec.sf4m or possibly alt.ScienceFictionForum (alt.science.fiction.forum)?????? Something! It's almost impossible to avoid or respond to spam. There are too many of them and the "authorities" are too busy to ahndle them. Solutions: i) Post more SF stuff! If there is enough of it the spammers will start to get the message. ii) Take measures to get a DESCRIPTIVE description for alt.sf4m circulated. "For Forumites everywhere. You know who you are." sounds like a come-on. iii) Get a new group name. I could live with alt.scifi4m. --Stefan -- +-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-+ ***@a**.******M.com ~ s******j@i*.******m.com http://www.ini.cmu.edu/~sjones/ CHARGES APPLIED FOR UNSOLICITED COMMERCIAL EMAIL! • j********o@***.com 03/06/1997 00:00:000 UTC In article <3*******.********8@b****m.com>, John Cholewa <**@b****m.com> writes: > But I just wish there was a way >to get around this stupidity. Someone in the know could surely hack things to filter most porn spam: they have a number of telling markers. The long term solution is to shoot the ACLU and IFF, then restore order to the galaxy. He said that a questionaire has to be put up here, asking people if the new format is alright with them... (making it moderated and changing it to rec.*.*.*) then after that has been up for a while and people are ok with it... we can change it. Jen
