ALT.SF4M Hi again and question for you all.. • s********l@***.com 28/07/1997 00:00:000 UTC Hi folks! It's Sandy formerly Kinney checking in again to see what's been up. It's good to see you all again, at least all of you who have posted recently. Just a quick question - why is this an alt. newsgroup? This spam loses its entertainment value quickly. Isn't there another place it could go, like soc. or something? Could it be a moderated group? And if the reason it isn't is that no one has volunteered, I'd be happy to do so. Apologies to those who like the spam...and hope you are all well. -Sandy • b********r@p*******e.com 29/07/1997 00:00:000 UTC s******r@s**.***.*****n.edu (Kevin Sterner) wrote: >As alt. groups go, alt.sf4m is a rather old one. I don't know where this bit of urban legend got started, but AOL did NOT come up with "SF4M" to mean "Single Female For Male." This came from the (printed) classified personal ads which predate both this newsgroup and possibly AOL and Usenet. Isn't there another place it could go, > like soc. or something? It's an alt. group because that was something Dave Weingart was able to do himself from Cornell, without any permission. The alt. heirarchy was supposed to be free from control and/or topical relevance. As alt. groups go, alt.sf4m is a rather old one. It predates the spam problem. In fact, I think it predates AOL's use of "sf4m" as meaning "single female for a male", which is why people think this is a sex group. I don't think there's any way to get a big 7 group. We had to fight with the net.gods a couple of years ago just to keep the alt. group! The self-appointed dictators of the alt. heirarchy (who actually assumed power well after alt.sf4m was up and running) tried to force us to take all our discussions to email. > Could it be a moderated group?
