I myself originally was caught up in the action that I saw it a second time. It's filled with gaping plot chasms and science impossibilities. The bugs aren't scary like I hoped they would be. I probably shouldn't compare it to Verhoeven's previous films, but Troopers certainly isn't Robocop. Basically, I guess, just a fun war movie. Oh yeah, the film also stooped so low as to grab every war movie cliche in the book! But I still liked it a lot. But as the memory recedes, I realize how substantial the movie really is. Contrast that with Alien Resurrection, where I wasn't immediately sated, yet memories of the plot have me looking back and realizing, "Hey! That was a deeper movie than I suspected!". In the end, it's the intelligent films like these that I'll love forever, not the near-mindless death-fests. But Mortal Kombat Annihilation did suck more than any other film I've seen this year. -JC (SF4MAC/2, **@c*******h.com) • s******r@s**.***.*****n.edu 01/12/1997 00:00:000 UTC In article <01bcfce6$e5696ae0$f*******d@w**.*******.***.*******y.net>, "Kevin D. A lot more of the novel made it into the movie than I thought possible. The special effects were the best I've seen. Two minor beefs with the film: 1) When the starships were being cut up in the first big battle, they were all crashing into each other. SPREAD THE HELL OUT! Heinlein would have cringed at it. Of course, the real reason is that Verhoeven wanted as much action on the screen at one time as possible. 2) WHY, WHY, WHY did they have Doogie and his droogies wearing SS officer uniforms at the end of the film? Only the insignia were different. Heinlein would have removed his name from the film before seeing that. Inexcusable. Best invention for the film: The bugs that shot down the starships. That's sense-of-wonder stuff. It takes a certain audacity of intellect to come up with insects that can take out starships *from the ground*. My advice: Do see the film, but DEFINITELY read the novel. -- K. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Kevin L. Sterner | U. Penn.
