ALT.SF4M The Truman Show - SPOILERS • j********o@***.com 07/06/1998 00:00:000 UTC spoilers . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . The clues were too obvious: they didn't let Truman use his intelligence enough to figure out his situation, or be clever enough in escaping. He never gets to tell off a dog, and we don't see him confronting and overcoming his fear of water. I would have liked to have seen more behind-the-scenes. What is the deal with "Dog Fancier" magazine? Is that a daily schedule or a company circular for Trumanians? Some of the fakery didn't make sense: the most logical thing would be for extras not to be actors, but just residents sworn to secrecy: a town that size needs substantial infrastructure and support staff - no need to have a hidden comissary to read scripts in, just have the extras go about their daily routine ignoring Truman. The biodome was cute, but underutilized, and practically unnecessary: they could just as well built a real little village in Florida. Everyone there must either love or hate him - I wish they'd gotten into that. I would have liked to have seen some of the principle cast's true feelings: it's hard to believe his mother doesn't really love him after raising him from infancy (as his Dad apparently did or does). I wish he had had a real conversation with his best friend: as the actress who played his wife said, it's not a job, it's a life-style. They're more prisoners than he is! They've been on call continuously for 15 years just to fool him: they know that their lives are fake! I wish his friend had made a last-minute appeal, on behalf of the entire cast and crew who depend upon him, to stay and either play along or make trouble, and/or prevent some other child from being victimized as his replacement. It's cuter this way; and more sinister. >Everyone there must either love or hate him - I wish they'd gotten into that. >I would have liked to have seen some of the principle cast's true feelings: >it's hard to believe his mother doesn't really love him after raising him from >infancy (as his Dad apparently did or does). Interesting trivia: The actress who played the actress who played the wife was intereviewed for some morning talk show. She explained the private "backstory" she made up for her character. She figures that the wife- actress was a washed-up childhood star who got a big break, and then stuck with it because she was heavily invested in the products she plugged! Again, all possible, and reasonable, but it's not their story. The message is a little more selfish. The movie is a fantasy about Truman and his need for self-determination. Of course, as you say they are prisoniers of their career choice. Their wisest move would be to chuck the illusion and leave show biz and get real lives. I wouldn't overanalyze this one. It's a wonderful and intricate piece of fantasy. (Remeber the scene where the best friend is reassuring Truman while stocking the candy machine? At one point he has to remove a few candy bars so he has something to do while he finishes the scene. How wonderfully versimilitudinous!)
