ALT.SF4M "ICon 98: Onwards..." • g*****t@***.com 16/09/1998 00:00:000 UTC "ICon 98: Onwards..." An Israeli Sci-Fi Convention 6-8 October, Sukot The Biggest Sci-Fi convention ever held in Israel. a National 3-day extravaganza of sci-fi, STAR TREK and Fantasy, from 10:00 in the morning to around 01:00 at night each day, in the Tel Aviv Cinematheque, held jointly by "STARBASE 972: the Israeli STAR TREK Fan Club" and "The Israeli Society for Sci-Fi and Fantasy". The convention deals with the future of humanity, and does so in a number of themes and activities. Two noted English sci-fi authors are visiting the convention: Ian Watson and Brian Stableford (on behalf of the British Council). They will discuss with the audience and lecture on their sci-fi, on their experience in the field and on subjects relating to the conventions' theme. On the side of STAR TREK, the convention is held around the BORG, part-human part-synthetic alien beings who are in a constant search to perfecting themselves, by conquering other worlds, other cultures, technologies, ideas, minds and bodies, and assimilating them into their existence, their collective. All episodes related to the BORG will be screened, amongst them never before seen and very-important-episodes from the STAR TREK series VOYAGER, along with a screening of STAR TREK: FIRST CONTACT. Also will be shown an episode of the original series which has a similar outline of story, and for the first time in a long time in Israel, the movie that started it all, the movie that took STAR TREK into its adventures on the big screen -- STAR TREK I: The Motion picture. Other activities include a panel discussion of experts and fans alike about the borg and a STAR TREK and BORG prize-wining quiz (for registration: 03-9223548). Attempts are being made to include BABYLON 5 in the convention as I write this announcement. Hopefully, there will be screenings of the two BABYLON 5 TV movies, "In The Beginning" and "Thirdspace", but that is not a certain fact for now. Another theme in the convention is the HABITAT project. A group of experts in different areas (sociology, technology, physics, biology, etc.) will discuss with the audience, based upon lectures given at the convention and earlier knowledge, the project of designing and building a generation ship in order to sustain human life beyond the solar system. This project will attempt to shape a generation ship technologically as well as socially. Together with all of that, there are screenings of masterpieces in the world of Sci-Fi, among them Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey (Based upon the book by Arthur C. Clarke) and it's continuation: 2010. Other movies include TERMINATOR 2: Judgment Day -- The Director's Cut, 12 Monkeys and much much more. For Fantasy Lovers, There is a lecture by Emanuel Lottem on "Religion and Fate in The Lord of the Rings", followed by a screening of "Return of the King", an animated movie telling the story of the third book in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. There might be some other Tolkien surprises but these are not yet set.
