     Bizzarre sudden rains cancel plans; old entertainments suffice!

     I went to a mantinee showing of ANTZ today, then snuck into
     PLEASANTVILLE.

     ANTZ was well-done so-slick-its-scary computer animation. Woody Allen

     does a good job voicing a dissatisfied worker ant who falls in love with

     a princess ant and get involved in political intrigue. Lots of good gags

     and visual fun. Not exactly deep, but fun.

     PLEASANTVILLE was really cool and well done, but too long. Not boring

     long or tedious long, but stretched and redundant. A half hour of cuts

     would have made it much less patronizing. Maybe they thought that people

     were getting too dumb to figure out complex messages. 'nyway, it's about

     two suburban kids -- wuss escapist brother and self-concious (ahem) slut

     sister -- who get blipped to a 1950s Black & White sitcom world. It's a

     really creepy place, bland and innocent beyond belief. The modern kids

     begin to subvert things with sex, art, and literature.

     AND on the way home I browsed trhough a bookstore and found a SIGNED
     copy

     of a Freeman Dyson book!

         Saw John Carpenters Vampires. Eh. Never read Vampire$

         the book. Avoid white wolf people like the plague.

         But the Ideas were neat in the movie. Not really

         scary but more a JC gorefest. For example...

         The lead 'Master' vampire sticks his sharp pointy nails

         into a goodguy and simply moves his hand up with

         excellent foley. Look ma! Two easy, well ok jagged,

         well ok jagged twitching hunks of blood soaked meat.

         Mr. Woods kills the movie though with deadpan

         acting that makes him look psycho. The girl

         must have been cast from a clinic where she was

         going therough the DT's. As that is what she

         looked like the whole movie.

         Nice action at points that needed action. But don't

         go looking for a Big Trouble in Little China meets

         the Lost Boys. Love the Idea that the Vatican has Demon

         Slayers. I also dig that vampires live in nests, and need

         to be regularly exterminated. I won't ruin how they kill

         vampires but it was fun and slick.

         All told fun to watch, if you pay cheaply. But

         not truly kickass.
