ALT.SF4M Total Recall 2070 • j********o@***.com 09/03/1999 00:00:000 UTC The new series on Showtime premiered this week, and looks like it will run Fridays at 10:45 pm. Pretty damn cool! Production values were lavish, atmospheric, and cinematic. The pilot ran an hour and a half, with a lot of story to tell and two crimes to connect. Based on the first episode, I recommend it heartily, and suggest catching up with the pilot before Friday. It's a detective series set in a world that's a genteel version of Bladerunner plus Total Recall: the megacorps of the Consortium can get away with murder, but only if they navigate the loopholes in the Inter-Planetary Council's law very carefully. Meanwhile, the police of the Citizens' Protection Bureau are willing to overlook a few technicalities to pursue justice and thwart the amoral plans of the megacorporations. The protagonist is Detective David Hume, whose partner is killed by rogue androids early in the pilot episode. Such a killing hasn't occured in the decades since tighter controls on android programming were adopted. Mrs. Hume is the daughter of a bladerunner, killed in the line of duty back in the days when there were bladerunners, and she isn't too happy to see her husband following in her father's footsteps. One of Hume's bosses has a beef with Rekall. Hume's new partner is, surprise! a bio-android. Together they pursue the killer androids and a mysteriously related case involving a distraught and confused immigrant couple. They come into conflict with Rekall's head of security, Mr. Collector, as evidence points towards his company. They pursue the androids to Mars. It's cool. The main character's principle function seems to be to throw tantrums... His wife responds to depression in a rather unusual way, doesn't she? Gorno
