ALT.SF4M Lost In Space Again • j********o@***.com 30/05/1999 00:00:000 UTC I just watched the movie again, and noticed that Robinson downloaded a route to Alpha Prime from the Proteus' computer - and set course for there at the end. So their problem was navigation, not distance. How this jibes with their random hyperdrive, I don't know... Come to think of it, they presumably had some other means of practical interstellar travel which would have taken them on their intended ten year trip from Earth, so they were not going to use the hyperdrive at all. This makes sense, although I wish they'd cleared things up by mentioning this slower FTL drive. One might most easily rationalize this not by another slower hyperdrive but by supposing that Robinson's hyperdrive *can* be targeted, but must be well clear of any stellar masses to work properly, so the ten years are flight time out of the solar system to where a quick FTL jump can take them to the vicinity of the Alpha system plus a lengthy approach. The function of the hypergate could then merely be to allow well behaved jumps from and to points within a solar system, hence, practical colonization. I'm not absolutely sure which time period they wind up in, either. Hey Win '95 users - tell me what happens when you use Ctrl + Shift + Right Cursor (as if to select whole words to the right)? My computer starts searching for a shortcut or something... Gorno "Mom always says I should try to make friends..."
