ALT.SF4M All Tomorrow's Parties • s******j@e***.**o.com 16/11/1999 00:00:000 UTC The tie-up volume of Gibson's "Bridge" trilogy is the best written. Enormously sleek, funny, singing prose. It made me think of Lieber's _The Silver Eggheads_, which had -- as the main big-money media -- "word wooze", fiction so good it made people drunk. The story . . . well, it's OK. A bit like _Mona Lisa Overdrive_, with people and cyberspacial forces rushing together toward society-shaking events. Everything would be dandy despite this retread'ness, except for a rather uncharacteristic deus ex machina and a final scene that's either really lame, or extremely subtle and opaque. I mean, WHAT'S WITH THE WATCHES, DUDE? TELL US MORE! Anyway. I got to hear Gibson read two chapters of this. If an audio- book with him as the reader comes out, I'll buy it, because his snotty Southern / Canadian drawl is perfect for the job. And maybe this would give him a chance to explain the DAMN WATCHES.
