WorldCon Bid? • a****4@f******.********n.ca 11/01/2000 00:00:000 UTC I've heard a rumour that the I-CON people are thinking about bidding for the Worldcon in 2003? I hope this is not true! ttyl Farrell • a****4@f******.********n.ca 12/01/2000 00:00:000 UTC HADSIL (h*****l@**.com) writes:   >>   >> I've heard a rumour that the I-CON people are thinking about   >>bidding for the Worldcon in 2003? (That's why I voted for Milleniunm Philcon over Boston in Orlando. Not that I thought the MP concom was that much better, but because I'd rather NOT be in Florida. -- 73 de Dave Weingart KA2ESK If you can read this, mailto:p*******x@****.com Y2K was over-hyped. http://www.liii.com/~phydeaux ICQ 57055207 • p*******x@****.com 11/01/2000 00:00:000 UTC One day in Teletubbyland, a****4@F******.********n.CA (Farrell McGovern) said: > I've heard a rumour that the I-CON people are thinking about >bidding for the Worldcon in 2003? I hope this is not true! Many years ago, some of us looked at the possibility of a Worldcon bid on Long Island. It was quickly established that we simply don't have enough rooms close enough to gether for a Worldcon. That still holds. I would oppose a Long Island Worldcon bid. -- 73 de Dave Weingart KA2ESK If you can read this, mailto:p*******x@****.com Y2K was over-hyped. http://www.liii.com/~phydeaux ICQ 57055207 • Perrianne Lurie 12/01/2000 00:00:000 UTC a****4@F******.********n.CA (Farrell McGovern) said: > I've heard a rumour that the I-CON people are thinking about >bidding for the Worldcon in 2003? I hope this is not true! I think what you're hearing (after passing through way too many uninformed links in the "telephone" chain) is related to I-Con's involvement in the Robert Sacks/Brian Burley bid for NYC. Right now, their only competition is the Irv Koch/Lance Oszko Charlotte bid, but MCFI is primed to announce a competing bid at either Arisia (this weekend) or Boskone (next month). I already told I-Con that this was a BAD idea, but they never listen to me. At least they're not so totally divorced from reality as to bid for themselves. • a****4@f******.********n.ca 12/01/2000 00:00:000 UTC Perrianne Lurie (b********r@p*******e.com) writes: > a****4@F******.********n.CA (Farrell McGovern) said:   >> I've heard a rumour that the I-CON people are thinking about   >>bidding for the Worldcon in 2003? That could be, but hat is for 2004, not 2003. I don't want to be in conflict for 2003, with Toronto's of which I am a pre-pre-pre supporter. I think I am one of the original 100 or so... ttyl Farrell • Perrianne Lurie 13/01/2000 00:00:000 UTC Yes, we're talking about 2004. The only bids for 2003 are Toronto and Cancun. The only bids for 2003 are Toronto and Cancun. Good. I guess that Toronto has the best shot, since most people don't want to have to pay to go to Cancun. True, Canada is a different country, but it isn't that different. In TO, most people speak English (or at least the Canadian Facimilie of it, eh?), and our dollar is worth about half of yours, so you get an almost 2 for 1 exchange. Plus, Toronto is a great place to visit, but you don't want to live there! We call it "Toronto the Good". A good example of this is a film director was filming in TO a movie that was set in New York. One of the scenes took place in an alley, and the director looked and looked, and then finally realized why it didn't look right...it was too clean! So, he got two garbage trucks full of garbage and strew it through the alley. So you think that would be the end of the tale...but no, wait....they finished shooting for that day, and went home, intending to finish the shoot the next day. Upon arriving for the next day's shoot, they found that someone had cleaned up all the garbage! ttyl Farrell • p*******x@****.com 14/01/2000 00:00:000 UTC One day in Teletubbyland, a****4@F******.********n.CA (Farrell McGovern) said: > I guess that Toronto has the best shot, since most people don't >want to have to pay to go to Cancun. True, Canada is a different country, I think that it's not that significant a difference in price for most people going to Worldcon. I haven't actually seen or read much about the Cancun bid. -- 73 de Dave Weingart KA2ESK If you can read this, mailto:p*******x@****.com Y2K was over-hyped. http://www.liii.com/~phydeaux ICQ 57055207 • h*****l@**.com 12/01/2000 00:00:000 UTC > I've heard a rumour that the I-CON people are thinking about >bidding for the Worldcon in 2003?
