     THE ROSE & THORN WRITER'S CONTEST:

     "HOOK!"

     Enter The Rose & Thorn writer's contest, "HOOK!" and

     win a box of gourmet Nirvana Chocolates

     Nancy Kress, winner of the 1997 Nebula Award for her

     novelette, "The Flowers of Aulit Prison," began her story

     like this: "My sister lies sweetly on the bed across the room from

     mine. She lies on her back, fingers lightly curled, her legs

     stretched straight as elindel trees. Her pert little nose, much

     prettier than my own, pokes delicately into the air. Her skin

     glows like a fresh flower. But not with health. She is, of

     course, dead."

     A strong starting paragraph, one that rivets the

     reader and compels him to read on, is called the "hook."

     Write your own hook paragraph of 150 words or less.

     Contest open to any writer, worldwide. Type or copy

     and paste your entry into the body of an email and send to:

     Entries should include your name, email address and word

     count at the top. Please do not send attached files as they

     will be disqualified. Enter as often as you like. �Each entry

     must be sent separately.
