I-CON impressions? • John Cholewa 02/04/2000 00:00:000 UTC Just wanted to dredge up some semblance of life here by asking about opinions on I-CON. I personally was sated by the Farscape marathon (which included the first two Season 2 episodes, as shown in the Forum by "Drow" Dave Rapp) and by the Battlestar Galactica Second Coming presentation (which blew nearly everybody away). I'm beyond pissed that the movie previews were nixed for the second year in a row. I bought too much stuff. :/ There was a very well formed girl decked out in red paint (eg, her entire skin) and black clothing -- horns and black wings, too, if I recall correctly. Overall, this seems to have been a ... healthier I-CON for the women attending. Which sucks for my low self esteem, I was stamping around half the time, all depressed over social stuff. Hope all of you guys had fun there. :) Anybody else? -JC • h*****l@**.com 03/04/2000 00:00:000 UTC I was there for the gaming. In the first game a groups of Jerks arrived 30 minutes late, played for 30 minutes, then left. The other players had a great time My second game had all the PC's be evil, now a staple of mine at ICON. Everyone had a blast. My third game was the same adventure as the first playtesting new combat and magic rules. Everyone had a blast. I met several players who played my games in ICON past. They fondly remember me and my games well. Teseract forever! I did catch Richard Hatch talking about Battlestar Galactica. Way cool! Going home the guy who plays Liam Kincaid (don't know the actor's name) walked passed me. Disappointed Erin Gray wasn't there. I should have had a hotel room (one of the perks of that GoH slot, after all), but the times I was leaving meant it was only a half hour drive home. They need to do something about the cabaret. Lec 100 is a bad room for it. Yes, there's plenty of room, but the acoustics suck rocks, and they need to get better tech (for example, sound checks are NOT an option, or we might have gone on without realizing that one of the 3 mics on stage was dead dead dead. And they need someone who knows how to tech theatrical shows. The mixing board really needs to be out in the center of the audience (if I do it again next year, I'm going to volunteer to bring my own gear). (They did much better doing the tech for my GoH concert, though). Doctor Demento is a very nice guy in person. So is Jason Carter (?). Julie Caitlin Brown was nice and woooo! legs ;). I-con is definitely moving much more towards the media spectrum than it ever has been in the past. For those of us who don't actually follow media, it's a little hard to get your bearings. I think there were only 2 booksellers in the dealers room. THe art show had lots of nice stuff this year. The only real scheduling glitch I had was that I had a panel scheduled for 3 in the Union, when my concert was at 2 in Javits. This is a Bad Bit of scheduling. (As was my Sunday AM panel. Scheduling filkers on Sunday AM panels is cruel, on Sunday AM panels when we've lost an hour doubly so. (Of course, the fact that I specifically requested nothing on Sunday Am so that I could get into Manhattan and get an application for the NY Marathon is another thing altogether...) I liked your songs during the Cabaret. (They sounded great in the back by the spotlight I was holding up. (I am sorry I missed your concert on Sat.) Thanks for being a guest, Dave. Harold S. Missed it entirely. Did briefly host an old-time Forumite out here the day before, and on Saturday got to see Kurzweil, Joy, Moravec and others chew on AI and nanotech issues. In a steamy, totally overpacked lecture hall on Stanford campus. Not a dead ringer for Javits 100, but with an odd resonance. A fitting substitute in a way. I really don't think I'd miss I-Con if I never went again. I've been to so many, and the opening act and stage directions are always the same. It doesn't mean much to me any more that the actors and lines are different. The fact that the SF is giving way to more media doesn't help much; I run into a wide variety of SF authors at the specialized little events I do get to, which satisfies that need. I'd rather catch up with the I-Con crowd at BBQs, when they don't act like they have the sword of damocles hanging over them, and can do what comes naturally, like eat and bullshit.
