ALT.SF4M Sentimental Journey • j********o@***.com 15/01/2001 12:50:16 UTC I visited Stony Brook last night. I went out to the last Anniversary, but didn't have time to prowl the campus. As it was Intercession (and after midnight), I wasn't able to visit all the places I wanted to - indeed, one of the most important no longer exists, that being the bus-stop behind Central Hall, approximate location of the "Chocolate Cake Incident," which was pretty much when I lost all hope (and which may in fact have been a disasterous miscommunication that ruined my only hope, rather than the confirmation of my inevitable doom!) I was able to get into Harriman (not that this was my Forum), and while the lights were on in the book room, both doors were locked. I did explore the attic and roof for the first time while I was there. I couldn't get into Hendrix, and I didn't even try the mutated Central Hall, but I looked in the window of Whitman 1A and got into (Roosevelt) Stage XII C - I wish I'd had a marker to say hello to the current inhabitants of the room I shared with Doc (and he with Carlo before me). I hung out in the Stage XII Cafeteria building where we used to game - I notice the mail room is gone: where do they get their mail now? I was able to enter Light and Medium Engineering - remember that they had a big-pixelated image of Abe Lincoln that only came into focus for a distance: now they've added images of the staff, which includes Gary 7 (Dr. Halada)! Amusing. It looks like the new Asian studies building is almost complete, and they've ripped up the parking lot, etc., behind Heavy Engineering (the one denizen I communicated with indicated that they were adding an extension). I was struck by how much bigger some parts of campus seem. I don't remember there being enough space for that giant "target" circle in center campus. They seem to have added a lot of parking all over the place. I drove around until I finally got the hang of that new features, like the bus loop road that I am prone to confuse with the Engineering Loop. I drove around MSRC. Coming home, it started to pour, and fast traffic materialized, so there was a refreshing sense of danger and challenge that capped the trip off nicely. Gorno • h*****l@**.com 17/01/2001 07:05:56 UTC Every I-CON I notice something different about the campus. I feel out of place, of sorts. Everything is familiar yet not familiar. I remember the way things were. I get to reminisce all the times I've had, the bad along with the good, and there was good :-). I fondly remember the daily Cosmic Encounter games, Mystic Wood, Bughouse Chess, and all Saturday gaming. I remember video nights, cataloguing parties, and Forum meetings on Tuesdays. I remember when I had a lot more interest in the logbook than I do now ;-). As I see the current Forumnites talking and hanging out I miss when I did it with my Forumite generation. I miss Tony. I miss Arun. I miss Chris Dykman. Even those of less friendly persuasion but with whom I eventually made peace with. I miss the college life and want to go back, but alas that cannot be. I must suffice with the three days of ICON. Jerry Katz
