  George Washington's Opponent

     I was watching Quantum Leap on Sci-Fi and reference was made to George

     Washington. It then dawned on me I do not know the answer to this
     question, if

     there is one.

     Who ran against George Washington for first President? I understand he
     was

     unanimously elected by the Electoral College, but was George Washington
     the

     only candidate put to the voters? If so, that doesn't sound very
     democratic to

     me. Who lost to Washington?
