     I went and saw this kiddie flick instead of going to I-Con.

     It rocked! Maybe I-Con did too, but not having gone I couldn't judge.

     This Rodriguez guy got his start making dirt-cheap films in his native

     Mexico. When his $7,000 film "The Mariachi" blew away Hollywood they
     gave

     him lots of money. He still does a lot of stuff himself; he wrote,
     directed,

     produced and wrote some of the songs for "Spy Kids."

     It's about the children of retired international spies -- former
     enemies,

     apparently of sparring South American nations -- who have to come to the

     rescue of M & P when they're kidnapped by the most F%$%ed up villain
     since

     I dunno. Kind of Willy Wonka spliced into PeeWee Herman.

     Cool stuff. Good fun for adults, probably way trippy for kids. Nice
     Latino

     flavor, which is a nice change.

         Seriously . . . the opportunity cost for going to I-Con outweighed
         the

         benefits. Taking off from work, cross-country flight, dealing with
         hotels

         and public transportation all seemed daunting. Conventions to me
         seem like

         Trade Shows I don't get paid for, with no casinos to go to afterward
         and

         pale people in Trek uniforms or furs hanging about and having to
         worry about

         dang media guests and . . . oye.

         Hopefully I'll catch up with people at Diane Brown's party this
         July.

         It's the people I'd go to I-Con to meet up with, but I-Con is a
         rotten

         place to do that. I WANT TO GO TO A DINER, Damnit!

         As it happened, there was a huge round of layoffs on Monday. My
         manager

         and various execs were poking around last week, trying to decide who
         got

         to Persue New Opportunities. If I were away on Friday (and maybe
         Thursday

         and Monday?) I might have been put on the "B" list.
