The bedrock of the Forum, the library was one of the first items brought forth by reluctant founder Jim Frenkel in 1968 to justify the organization of the organization (2001-10-07). From there, the library grew steadily for nearly twenty years, then sharply shrunk, then grew again until the volumes counted well into five digits, making it at one point the largest public lending library of science fiction and fantasy (et al) on the coast.

Due to constraints from the University, the library has at times had to limit its size. During most of the 3rd Millennium, the lion's share of books have needed to stay in storage due to the Forum being shifted between rooms and buildings, most of them too small to house anywhere near a full collection.

In Spring 2024, administrators from Stony Brook's Campus Life Centers declared that all student clubs would lose access to their permanent spaces. The Forum was given an extra half-year in deference to the existence of the library, and the CLC's plan was to co-opt ownership of the library so that it could continue to exist but without being owned or directly associated with the Forum.
